Olympus Mju 760

The good: Sleek, light body; almost no lens distortion.
The bad: Slightly sluggish performance, mediocre color reproduction.
The bottom line: The Olympus Mju 760 is a great choice if you just want a small, light, weather-resistant camera, but beware of image flaws.

Olympus SP-550 UZ

3x optical zoom? Standard fare. 12x optical zoom? Sweet to have. But 18x optical zoom? Jaws dropped at the preproduction unit of the Olympus SP-550UZ. Samsung had its Digimax Pro 815 with 15x optical zoom lens in 2005, but that's not a camera most people would lug around everywhere they go. With the SP-550UZ, Olympus has managed to trim down the size of a megazoomer into a compact shooter heavy on features, yet won't break your back. ..

Canon IXUS 850 IS

The good: Good focal range for lens; quick performance; optical image stabilization; attractive design.
The bad: Few manual controls; extremely noisy photos at ISO 1,600.
The bottom line: A slim, stylish body, a wide-angle lens, very good photo quality, and snappy performance make the Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS a great point-and-shoot.

Leica DLux 3

The good: Great lens; nice design; lots of manual controls.
The bad: Generally soft photos; mediocre movies; no optical viewfinder; expensive.
The bottom line: A good choice for an enthusiast looking for a powerful camera that can fit into a jacket pocket; however, the Leica D-Lux 3 has a price only a Leica aficionado could love.

Casio Exilim EX-S770

The good: Slim and trendy design; large 2.8-inch LCD; abundant scene modes; data transport feature.
The bad: Small buttons; average performance; mediocre image quality.
The bottom line: The Exilim EX-S770 is a stylish point-and-shoot camera, but its sluggish burst mode and disappointing image quality mar the shooter.

Kodak EasyShare V610

The good: Small size for 10x optical zoom; innovative dual-lens design; plenty of scene modes; in-camera panorama stitching.
The bad: Average image quality; no image stabilization; few manual controls; no manual white balance.
The bottom line: As one of the only pocketable cameras with a 10x zoom lens, the Kodak EasyShare V610 is on the cutting edge of design; we just wish the image quality were better.
